So let me get this straight... for thousands of years, God was taking unbaptized children and putting them in a place of little torment since they were innocent but not "reborn", and then suddenly, in the year 2005, he spontaneously says, "Surprise, suckers! You're going to the malebolge! Mwahahaha!!!"
Something about that doesn't sound very Godly.

Actually, it turns out that Limbo never even existed!
