Perhaps it had something to do with the idea that schools were teaching irrelevant subjects, but teachers were not viewed very highly by paleolithic society.
We need to come up with a way to make teachers more respected in the community!

So, educators began codifying their content into a new discipline. The result was systematic teacher preparation and a whole new language of teaching.
It's important that you future teachers know the significance of a subject's response to the stimulus and subsequent reward based on said response in an operant conditioning scenario, heretofore believed to be limited to intragenerationa l contexts but which new research suggests ...

But even with the elevated status of teachers, radical parents continued to complain...
Why can't schools let my kid direct her own learning? Schools are too regimented!

...until teachers gave lip service to change.
